Police talk about brothel case at local exhibit

The exhibition Faceless – Women in Prostitution was shown at the Leinfelden House for four weeks and had more than 400 visitors. It was organized by a local group called the Prostitution Working Group Leinfelden-Echterdingen, which started in 2022. The group wants to teach people about sex work, human trafficking, and forced prostitution.

Human traffickers, pimps and a brothel owner worked together

At the last event of the exhibition, two retired police investigators, Wolfgang Fink and Helmut Sporer, talked about a past case involving a brothel called Paradise in Echterdingen. In the late 2010s, the brothel owner Jürgen Rudloff and two others were put on trial. They were accused of helping with human trafficking and forced prostitution.

According to Sporer, the police in Augsburg first started looking into the case. He said that an Augsburg brothel needed more women and was getting help from Paradise in Echterdingen. Sporer said the case was large and involved people from the business world and public life. He also said that women were moved between brothels so there would always be new people for clients.

Sporer and Fink said that traffickers, pimps, and brothel owners often work together. They believe that Germany’s current prostitution laws make it easier for these things to happen.

Fink said the Paradise case was the first time a brothel owner was found guilty. He said the judge at the time saw it as a message to lawmakers. The investigators think the laws today still don’t do enough to protect people in prostitution. They mentioned another system, used in some countries, where clients and brothel owners can also be punished.

Stephanie Reinhold, who helped run the event and is a local government leader, said that a new government in Berlin might bring changes to the law. Regina Golke, who started the working group, said the exhibition and events were a success. Even though it was only open for a short time, over 400 people came to visit.
