Pattaya police target Coconut Tree Women in major beach raid

pattaya

More than 50 police officers swept through Pattaya Beach in a major nighttime raid targeting prostitutes known locally as Coconut Tree Women who work under the palm trees along the popular tourist strip.

The operation, supported by tourist police and immigration officials, resulted in over 50 arrests of women and transgender individuals working along the beachfront promenade. Those arrested faced fines, while foreign nationals involved were entered into a tracking system to monitor their movements.

A familiar scene

The so-called Coconut Tree Women have been part of Pattaya’s nighttime landscape for decades. They offer their services discreetly under the shady palm trees that line the beach, earning their nickname from their regular spots beneath the coconut palms.

This wasn’t the first raid of its kind – similar police operations have been happening for over 40 years. However, the problem appears to persist, with many sex workers returning to their usual spots shortly after police leave the area.

The raid drew sharp criticism and mockery on social media platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter). Within hours of the operation, users were posting photos showing familiar faces back under the coconut palms, accompanied by sarcastic comments.

Pattaya’s reputation

Pattaya’s reputation as a party and sex tourism destination is known worldwide – exactly what city officials want to change. The raid was meant to send a signal that Pattaya wants to become safer and more family-friendly.

However, critics argue that such actions are only superficial and leave the real problems untouched – namely poverty and lack of alternatives for the sex workers. Without sustainable measures, Pattaya will continue struggling with its image problem.

Despite social media ridicule, authorities defended their operation. Police emphasized that the raid was part of a larger plan to increase public safety and restore tourist confidence.

Prostitution is deeply rooted in Pattaya, with many of the Coconut Tree Women seeing no other way to earn a living. Without social programs or alternative job opportunities, the cycle is unlikely to break.
