Police in Villach are keeping a close eye on criminal activity, and recently, two separate operations have made the news. In the first case, a robber was caught shortly after the crime. In the second, a longer investigation led to the arrest of individuals involved in illegal prostitution.
Robbery suspect caught in brothel hours after crime
A 35-year-old man from Carinthia was arrested only a few hours after robbing a tobacconist shop near Villach’s regional hospital. The masked suspect entered the store around midday, threatened a female employee with a pistol, and fled with stolen cash.
Police launched an immediate manhunt, setting up checkpoints on roads leading out of the city.
Thanks to multiple witness statements, officers were able to trace the man to a local brothel, where he was arrested later that same evening. According to police, he was in a disturbed state and under the influence of alcohol at the time of his arrest, which delayed his interrogation.
Major operation against illegal prostitution
In a separate, larger investigation, the Carinthian Criminal Investigation Department, together with police from Villach and Klagenfurt and the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum, carried out a five-day operation focused on illegal prostitution and human trafficking. The operation took place between March 24 and 28 in the city centers of Villach and Klagenfurt.
Authorities targeted individuals involved in illegal sex work, as well as suspected pimps and organizers. The goal was to uncover cases of sexual exploitation, human trafficking, and cross-border prostitution.
Ten women were arrested during the operation and have since been deported to their home countries, Romania and Hungary. They were between 18 and 25 years old and were found to be working in violation of regional prostitution laws, as well as Austrian health regulations, including the AIDS Act and laws concerning sexually transmitted diseases.
Suspected use of the Loverboy Method
Police suspect that some of the women may have been victims of the so-called Loverboy Method, a tactic in which traffickers lure young women into relationships and later force them into prostitution.
Victims often believe they are acting voluntarily and do not recognize themselves as victims of exploitation. Economic hardship was a common reason the women gave for engaging in sex work.
Investigators also found evidence that pimps remained close to the women during their work, sometimes organizing client meetings on their behalf and ensuring they were carried out under supervision.
In two cases, further investigations into suspected pimps and possible organizers are still underway. Police believe the illegal operations may be part of a larger network extending beyond Austria.
