On October 4, a huge fire destroyed the old brothel called Steinhagener Landhaus in Steinhagen. Over 80 firefighters worked through the night to control the flames. The fire alarm went off at 12:34 a.m., and emergency services responded right away.
Because of the fire, the B68 road had to be closed for a while, which caused some traffic problems. The emergency teams worked together to put out the fire as quickly as they could, but the cause of the fire is still unknown.
Police investigation
After the fire was put out, the police started investigating to find out what caused it. Authorities said the investigation might take some time because they want to carefully examine everything that led up to the fire.
The police will also be looking into any possible safety violations or other reasons that could have contributed to the fire. The fire department confirmed on Friday morning that the building was completely destroyed.
Other recent brothel fires
The fire at Steinhagener Landhaus is not the only recent brothel fire. In the past months, there have been several other similar incidents, showing a concerning pattern.
Relax Lounge in Recklinghausen
A recent fire involved an old brothel in North Rhine-Westphalia called Relax Lounge. This brothel has had several fire incidents since it closed.
Up until 2011, this place in Recklinghausen-South was popular for adult entertainment in the Ruhr region. After it closed, it became an abandoned building.
The most recent fire happened in February 2023, and the Recklinghausen Fire Department quickly responded to put it out.
The fire department said, that when they arrived, they found a fire on the first floor of an abandoned building. This property was already known to them because of multiple past fires.
It is unclear why the building has been left in this state, and the city has limited power to take action because it is privately owned.
The city of Recklinghausen said, that since the building stands alone on private land, there is no danger to public roads or residents. Therefore, demolishing it is not necessary.

Freubad brothel in Recherswil
In December 2023, a fire with a lot of smoke broke out at the Freubad brothel in Recherswil, Switzerland. Thankfully, no one was hurt. The Cantonal Police said that the fire started around 1:30 a.m. It was a smoldering fire, which means it caused a lot of smoke.
People were told to leave the brothel as a precaution. One person said they had trouble breathing, but they did not need any medical help. Around 20 firefighters from Recherswil quickly came to the scene and got the fire under control.
