It happens more often than anyone admits. A jacket on the back of a chair, a phone that slid under the bed, a wedding ring taken off and left on a shelf. Leaving something behind in a brothel is not like leaving it in a restaurant, because the thing you have lost is often the thing you least want somebody to phone you about. What happens in the first ten minutes
Rooms are checked between guests, every time, because the room has to be reset anyway. Whoever cleans it finds the item, and it goes to reception rather than staying in the room or travelling home with anybody. In a well-run house this is a written procedure rather than a favour, and it exists because the alternative creates arguments nobody wants.
The item is logged: what it is, which room, what time. Valuables are separated from clothing and put somewhere lockable. None of this is unusual for a hospitality business; what makes it sensitive is the second half of the problem, which is how anyone gets in touch with you about it.
Why nobody calls you
This is the part people get wrong. A house that took your name and number and then rang you at home would be solving a small problem by creating a much larger one. Most venues deliberately hold very little about a guest, and what they do hold is not a contact list for chasing lost property. So the default is simple: the item waits, and you come back for it.
That restraint is not laziness, it is the core of the business. How to get it back
Go back, and go back soon. Ask at reception, say which evening it was and roughly which room, and describe the item. You do not need to explain yourself, and you will not be asked to. Reception deals with this regularly and treats it as administration rather than as a story.
If returning in person is genuinely impossible, phoning is the next option, and a house will usually confirm whether something matching your description is held, without discussing anything else. What they will not do is post a valuable item to an address, because that requires exactly the kind of record they avoid keeping. How long an item is kept
There is no single citywide rule, and houses differ. In practice, documents, cards and obviously valuable items are held longest and most carefully, because the consequences of losing them are worst. Clothing tends to have the shortest life, and an unclaimed jumper will not be sitting in a cupboard six months later.
Anything involving a bank card or an identity document is worth treating as urgent for your own reasons rather than the venue’s: cancel first, retrieve second. The card being safe in a drawer behind reception is not much comfort if you spend a week assuming it was stolen.
When something is missing rather than left behind
These two situations feel identical at two in the morning and are completely different in substance. If you believe something was taken rather than forgotten, say so at the time, at reception, before you leave the building. How to not need any of this
The habits are dull and they work. Keep everything in one place rather than distributed around the room, so that one glance covers it. Take the jacket off last and put it where you will see it on the way out. Do a deliberate sweep before you open the door, including under the bed and in the bathroom, since those are where phones and watches actually end up.

The short version
Your item is almost certainly at reception, logged and waiting, and nobody is going to phone you about it. Go back in person, soon, describe it, and expect the conversation to be brief and unembarrassing. Cancel cards and report lost documents immediately regardless of where you think they are. If you suspect theft rather than forgetfulness, raise it inside the building on the night, not afterwards.
